CHARACTERISTICS OF VIRUSES Viruses are infectious agents with both living and nonliving characteristics Living characteristics of viruses a. They reproduce at a fantastic rate, but only in living host cells. b. They can mutate. Nonliving characteristics of viruses a. They are acellular, that is, they contain no cytoplasm or cellular organelles. b. They carry out no metabolism on their own and must replicate using the host cell's metabolic machinery
STRUCTURE OF VIRUS Head a. Capsid (protect) b. DNA(Hereditas) Tail a. Neck(trasnport of DNA) b. Tail fiber to stick on the host cell
LYTIC CYCLE Viruses of the lytic cycle are called virulent viruses. The lytic cycle is a six-stage cycle Adsorbtion Penetration/injection a virus must first enter the cell through the plasma membrane, The virus then releases its genetic material (RNA or DNA) into the cell. Replication process copies their DNA
Sintesis The virus' nucleic acid uses the host cell's "machinery" to make large amounts of viral components Assembly After many copies of viral components are made, they are assembled into complete viruses. Lysis The phage then directs production of an enzyme that breaks down the cell envelope
LYSOGENIC CYCLE Lysogeny is characterized by integration of the bacteriophage nucleic acid into the host bacterium's genome. The newly integrated genetic material, called a prophage The stape of lysogenic cycle a. Adsorbtion b. Penetration/injection c. Fussion (DNA virus fussion with DNA host cell) d. Fission (host cell and virus in the host cell fission)
EXAMPLES OF LISOGENIC VIRUS Corynebacterium diphtheriae produces the toxin of diphtheria only when it is infected by the phage β. In this case, the gene that codes for the toxin is carried by the phage, not the bacteria. Vibrio cholerae is a non-toxic strain that can become toxic, producing cholera toxin Shigella dysenteriae, which produces dysentery has toxins that fall into two major groups Streptococcus pyogenes, produce a pyrogenic exotoxin
THE KINDS OF VIRUS BASED ON GENETIC MATERIAL
VIRUS DNA A DNA virus is a virus that has DNA as its genetic material and replicates using a DNAdependent DNA polymerase 1. Herpes virus 2. hepatitis B
VIRUS RNA An RNA virus is a virus that has RNA (ribonucleic acid) as its genetic material. Contoh Rhabdovirus, Picornavirus, virus TMV
HIV PENYEBAB AIDS HIV is the human Immunodeficiency virus The effect of HIV is acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS There are two types of HIV, HIV-1 and HIV-2. Both types of HIV damage a person’s body by destroying specific blood cells, called CD4+ T cells, which are crucial to helping the body fight diseases.
HIV TRANSMITTED Transmitted when infected blood, semen, vaginal fluids, or breast milk enter another person's body. This most often occurs during unprotected sex or during injection drug use (when needles are shared). Anyone who is infected with HIV can transmit it, whether or not they appear sick, have an AIDS diagnosis. Infected women who become pregnant can transmit HIV to their newborns
HIV CANNOT REPRODUCE NOT SPREAD BY:
OUTSIDE THE HUMAN BODY. IT IS
Air or water. Insects, including mosquitoes. Studies conducted by CDC researchers and others have shown no evidence of HIV transmission from insects. Saliva, tears, or sweat. There is no documented case of HIV being transmitted by spitting. Casual contact like shaking hands or sharing dishes. Closed-mouth or “social” kissing.
HOW CAN HIV BE PREVENTED? Because the most common ways HIV is transmitted is through anal or vaginal sex or sharing drug injection equipment with a person infected with HIV, it is important to take steps to reduce the risks associated with these. They include: Know your HIV status. Everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 should be tested for HIV at least once. If you are at increased risk for HIV, you should be tested for HIV at least once a year. If you have HIV, you can get medical care, treatment, and supportive services to help you stay healthy and reduce your ability to transmit the virus to others. If you are pregnant and find that you have HIV, treatments are available to reduce the chance that your baby will have HIV.
PROTECTED SEXUAL INTERCOURSE.
HIV can enter the body during sex through the mucous membranes of the anus, vagina, penis (urethra). Unprotected anal and vaginal sex are the riskiest sexual activities. There are a small, but growing, number of reported cases of HIV transmission through oral sex; however, the risk of oral sex transmission is clearly lower than for anal or vaginal sex. Stop free sex, sex with special patner
INJECTION DRUG USE.
Injection drug use. * Using shared, unsterile needles and syringes carries a high risk of HIV transmission. Blood transfusions and organ transplants * The risk of acquiring HIV from a blood transfusion today is estimated to be 1 in 4 for every 600,000 transfusions. The risk of acquiring HIV from an organ transplantation is probably similar
THERE IS NO RISK OF HIV INFECTION FROM:
donating blood mosquito bites toilet seats shaking hands hugging sharing eating utensils food or objects handled by people with HIV or AIDS spending time in the same house, business, or public place with a person with HIV/AIDS.
