Kangean).
Konsentrasi klorofil-a permukaan antara 0,4 - 1,795 mg/m3.
The main purpose of thus research is dynamic mapping of the pelagic fish ecosystems with different seasons and depths of water (spatio-temporal pattern), through an integrated-analysis aprroach of both the characters of the small pelagic fish ecosystems in shallow waters (Kangean islands) and large pelagic fish ecosystems in deep waters (North Irian Jaya) and correlated to the `spectralsignature' of both NOAA-AVHRR and Landsat_TM data. The prevailing research on fisheries and remote-sensing in Indonesia carried out by several institutions, was basically restricted to their own sectoral interest, with no holistic concept on parameters as part of an ecosystem, and ultimatelly resulting in difficulty in understanding the whole ecosystems and resources as a comprehensive information. Remote sensing studies on marine environment have been always regarded as a 'seatruth' process based on real-time field data, which is in fact creating difficulties for Indonesian conditions and resulting in non-comprehensive information. The remote sensing aspect in this research will focus on the spectral analysis. Based on 11 years data of national production of small pelagic fisheries from 1985 to 1995 which was mainly produced, from Kangean Islands waters shows a specific seasonal cycle, but unfortunately on other hands the characters of the ecosystems were not known yet. Therefore this research was focused on the study of the characters of both deep water ecosystems (North Irian Jaya), and shallow water ecosystems (Kangean Islands) during East and West Monsoon, as well as the spectral-signature from NDVI_43, CPA_42 and MIRI_73 algorithms of Landsat TM and especially the potential use of band-1 and band-2 of NOAH data for chlorophyll-a algorithm. This creates the basic information to build the modeling algoritlun. Result of the research wasvalidated through correlations with biomass data from acoustic method for deep-water ecosystem off North Irian Jaya and the actual catch data collected directly using the fishing vessel "Tunas Samodra" for shallow water ecosystem of Kangean Islands. The approach in this research is integration of ecosystem data of abiotic parameters, such as water temperature, depth, salinity, nitrate, phosphate and biotic parameters such as chlorophyll-a, types and domination of both phytoplankton and zooplankton community, larvae and fish biomass. Methods of sampling and measurements were horizontal and vertical to represent the water column, in order to study the character and seawater distribution pattern. Among the water parameters, an intercorellation was conducted to understand each ecosystem characters of the respective waters in
different seasons. For data from NOAA satellites, sea surface temperature was derived through ‘split-window' algorithm of band-4 and band-5 (Rosby & Montgomery 1984) to indicate seawater mixing and distribution pattern. Chlorophyll-a algorithm was derived from both NOAA satellite data as well as Landsat TM satellite data. NOAH data, NDVI of band-1 and band-2 was used , while for Landsat_TM data NDVI of band-3 and band-4, `Chlorophyll Photosynthetic Activity' (CPA) of band-2 and band-4 , 'Middle-Infrared Reflectance Index (MIRI) of band-3 and band-7. The next step is intercorrelation of the field data to the algorithm of the satellite data. The best correlated algorithm, a spectral analysis was conducted through spectral cluster of statistic analysis to study a he `spectral signature' both on NOAA and LANDSAT_TM data, for different seasons and area of waters, that is shallow (Kangean Islands water) and deep water (North Irian Jaya waters). Characters of deep water of North Irian Jaya as revealed in this study among others are a specific water mass circulation pattern, which is based on the plot of most of surface data such as SST, N/Pratio, chlorophyll-a, plankton and fish biomass. This plot yields a similar water circulation pattern. Sea surface temperature ranges between 27 - 30 °C. While temperature from the surface to the depth of 75 m above the thermocline layer is between 29 °C to 26 °C, and temperautre at depth of 300 m below thermocline layer is from 26 °C to 9 °C. Plot of temperature and depth shows that the thermocline layer is at the depth of 110 m. Based on linear regression of vertical temperature and depth, a constants of vertical temperature decrease (Ctv) was developed as quantitative indicator for the water transparency or the penetrations of sunlight into the water column. The Ctv constant for deep water ecosystem of North of Irian Jaya is 0.0681. Based on the vertical profile of temperature and salinity data indicates the 'up-welling' process in which sea water mass with temperature of 16 °C at depth of 200 m and 26 °C at depth of 90 m flows from North Irian Jaya (St. 5) and Halmahera (St.4) to the surface water near Seram island (St.3). This fact is almost the same with the vertical circulation pattern of nitrate, phosphate concentrations and plankton abundant in this region. Vertical profile of salinity indicates the 'down-welling effect', where water with salinity of 34,0 34,6 psu flows down to the depth below 300 in at St.4. Concentration of surface N-nitrate is between 0,1 - 0,8 µg/l, from surface to the depth of 75 m ranges between 0,279 - 3,619 µg/l, and at depth of 300 m below the thermocline is 15,438 34 µg/l. Surface concentration of P-phosphate range between 0,04 - 0,28 µg/I, and N/P-ratio range between 4 - 24. Based on the vertical profil of N-nitrate and P-phosphate indicates that the thermocline layer act as a barrier in the vertical circulation of these nutrients. The concentration of chlorophyll-a was still high until the depth of 300 m, passing through the thermocline layer at the depth of 110 m. In general, the concentration of nitrate, phosphate and chlorophyll-a was one-fifth or onetenth of concentration at the depth below
the thermocline layer of 111) in. The constant of C300/C0 (based on Cdeep/Csurface concept) for Nnitrate is 52 and for P-phosphate is 16. Concentration of surface chlorophyll-a ranges between 0.4 1.795 mg/m3. The concentration is still high (1.6 mg/m3) at the depth of 200 in (St.3), and 1.8 mg/ m3 at the depth of 300 in (St.19). Dominant phytoplankton in this water is Tricodesmium sp (Cyanophyceae) with relative abundance index (Simpson's Index) of 34.70 % and the specific of this water is the abundance of Dynoflagelates and Foraminifers. Zooplankton is dominated by genera of Copepods. Acoustic data from surface to the depth of 150 m, indicates that the highest biomass of 1200 r.i.u was arround the upwelling region. Where as about 50% of the biomass (TS : 100 - 150 dB) was assumed as plankton biomass, 40% (TS : 50 - 100 dB) biomass of larvae and about 10 % (TS : 0 - 50 dB) biomass of fish. In general, the three chlorophylla algorithms of Landsat_TM gave a good spectral response (high correlation coefficient) to the distribution of total biomas (acoustic data) for the North Irian Jaya waters. Statistical analysis on the spectral cluster of algorithm CPA 42 of Landsat_TM data gave a mean from 10 classes of spectral cluster : 134.979 for North Irian Jaya. Sea surface temperature of Kangean islands ranges between 27 - 29 °C. The constant Ctv for shallow water is 0.0733. Surface concentration of N-nitrate ranges between 0.34 - 1.06 gg/1 and Pphosphate between 0.0885 - 0.4524 µg/l. Constant of C300/C0 for N-nitrate is 42, and P-phosphate is 5.81. Surface concentration of chlorophyll-a is about 0.4 mg/m3 and 1.6 mg/m3 at the depth of 150 m. Based on the vertical profile of temperature and salinity as well as pattern of sea-surface temperature from band-4 and baud-5 of NOAA data, in general the water mass is homogenous during dry season (East Monsoon) and indicates a horizontal mixing process of water during wet season (West Monsoon) from December to March. Dominant phytoplankton in Kangean waters is a genus of Coscinodiscus spp (Bacillariophyceae) and Pleurosigma spp, dominant zooplankton is Copepods. Dominant fish catch is Decapterus spp, Rastrelliger kanagurta and Euthynus spp.The average fish, catch per haul during dry-season (May - October 1997) is 14,250 kg and 9,000 kg during wet-season (December 1997 - March 1998). The center of fishing position is around the North of Kangean island at 115° E and 6° S. Based on the three chlorophyll-a algorithms of Landsat_TM data on the sea-truth stations, which give the best spectral response with respect to field data, is CPA_42 algorithm. The mean of 10 classes of cluster-spectral of CPA_42 algorithm is 85.017 for Kangean Islands. Chlorophyll-a algorithm of NDVI_12 of NOAA data yields the best spectral response both to the distribution of chlorophyll-a and phytoplankton. The mean value from 10 classes of spectral cluster for this algorithm in the dry season was 158.489 and 47.121 for the wet season.
