12. Rafael del Pino Auditorium Building Spain-based Rafael de La-Hoz Architects has designed the Rafael del Pino Auditorium Building next to Madrid’s Paseo de la Castellana. The facade of the building stands out for its metallic arboreal structure that supports the structure of the building on both sides. The available space has been interpreted as the garden that it is, instead of treating it as just an ordinary plot of land. Consequently, the project’s points of reference are not the heterogeneous architectures that surround it, not even the oldest of them (Salaberry’s palace), but rather the place where it is situated: a garden. The aim is not just to replace the garden by a building but to transform the garden into an inhabited garden. After transforming the existing plant layout into a sustaining geometry, the solid habitable space is inserted into it. The ribbon on the Auditorium was cut today by Madrid’s Mayor, Alberto Ruiz Gallardon. Also in attendance were the Vice-president of the Fundacion Rafael del Pino, Maria del Pino, and the building’s architect, Rafael de La-Hoz. Transparent, open and inspired by the garden that previously existed in the same space, the project exhibits a spectacular arboreal structure that supports and hugs the inhabitable body of the building on both sides. Based on the idea of transparency, the new Rafael del Pino Auditorium is located on the ground floor, with a capacity of 250 people and with views of the street, it will have the latest cutting-edge technology. The Fundacion Rafael del Pino wishes to use the auditorium to contribute to the promotion of culture and knowledge in Spain in addition to offering a new place for debates in the city of Madrid. The reference of the project is not the heterogeneous architecture that surrounds it, or the most long-lived-el palacete-but rather its location: a garden. Therefore, it is not about substituting a garden for a building, but rather about transforming a garden into an inhabitable garden. By transforming the existing plant network into sustaining geometry, the inhabitable solidity is introduced. Located on a side street off of Madrid’s Paseo de la Castellana, at number thirty-two of Fortuny street, this 5000 m2 building is distributed throughout five floors, an attic and two levels underground, located in the old garden of the palacete built by Salaberry in 1907. The project stands out for it’s metallic (steel) arboreal structure that supports the structure of the building on both sides. This has been possible thanks to the application of new technology in laser cutting systems and the application of new computer systems and topography systems that allowed for its assembly as well as the curved and inclined shapes of its north facade, without a doubt, one of the outstanding features of the project. Rafael del Pino Auditorium Building, image courtesy of Rafael de La-Hoz Architects. Another remarkable characteristic is the transparency and translucency of the building. The described metallic structure and the use of concrete floor structures supported on the pillars allow for an absolute transparency of the 525 square meters of surface area on each floor. The absence of pillars in the center and the glass facades allow natural light to enter the interior, creating an open and transparent building. -27-

13. The Puerta de Europa (Kio Towers) The Puerta de Europa towers are twin office buildings in Madrid. The towers have a height of 114 metres and have 26 floors. They were constructed from 1990 to 1996. The towers were designed by the American architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee, built by Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas and commissioned in 1996 by the Kuwait Investment Office. Leslie E. Robertson Associates, RLLP New York (LERA) provided structural engineering services. Each building is 115 m tall with an inclination of 15°, making them the first inclined skyscrapers in the world. They are located near the Chamartín railway station, on the sides of the Plaza Castilla bus station, north from the Paseo de la Castellana and near the Cuatro Torres Business Area. After the Torres KIO fraud case, KIO had to sell the buildings, which are now owned by Caja Madrid and Realia. The west tower has a rooftop helicopter pad outlined in blue; the east tower has a red one.

16. Cliphouse The materials employed create two unbroken ’skins’, whereby wood is the prevailing one for the interior and copper for the outside. Without forgetting their unbroken character, the inner one extends to the outer one in some cases and viceversa. The inner lining has been designed as a planking which becomes thinner when shaping the curves and gives the space a very tactile feeling. The copper on the outside will establish a friendly relationship with the trees surrounding the house as well as with the boundary wall, which is the front of the on the street. This façade has been built with polished U-type glass, with a double vinyl-sun filter providing a shield against excessive sun rays and for the client´s privacy. The building process is based on a rational module system with a sequence of tolled steel foils anchored to the concrete wall (to both frameworks where allowing the passage of the ducts), this shaping the development of the foils. The installations have been inserted between the outer and the inner framework thanks to a process of excellent workmanship guaranteed by the builder in order to achieve a flawless integration in the architectural elements. The furnishing and decoration of the spaces was one of the main worries of our client, which gave way to a personal and eclectic result, based on the architecture on the whole, which definitely responds to the personality of the client himself.’

17. El Edificio Celosia Dutch architects MVRDV in collaboration with Madrid architect Blanca Lleó have completed a social housing project – Celosia Residence in Madrid, Spain. The large housing block is divided into 30 small staggered blocks of apartments to create the wide openings for communal patios throughout the building. In Madrid-Sanchinarro the first residents received the keys to their apartments in the just completed Celosia building. Jacob van Rijs of MVRDV and Blanca Lleó have completed the social housing block near the Mirador Building, which is an earlier collaboration. The perforated block of Celosia assembles 146 apartments, communal outside areas throughout the building, and parking and commercial program in the plinth. The total floor area is 21,550m2. With a construction cost of 12,6 million Euro the apartments can be sold for affordable prizes. The city block is opened and allows wind and light to enter the building, offering vistas and outside spaces contrasting the surrounding area. The client is EMVS, the public housing corporation of the city of Madrid. The given volume of the city block was divided into 30 small blocks of apartments. These blocks are positioned in a checkerboard pattern next to and on top of each other, leaving wide openings for communal patios throughout the building. 146 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments are all accessed via these communal spaces. Most apartments offer additional private outdoor space in the shape of a loggia right behind the front door. Inhabitants have the possibility to gather in the communal high-rise patios which offer views towards the city and the mountains and provide natural ventilation in summer. Opening the front doors connects the private outdoor areas to the communal area. Celosia Residence, image courtesy of Ricardo Espinosa The façade is made of coated concrete which was from the ground floor up constructed in complete mould system, an efficient and clean way to cast concrete, keeping the construction cost to a minimum; an important asset for this social housing project. The polyurethane coating allows the façade to shimmer and reflect depending on the light condition. All windows are floor to ceiling height and can be shielded from the sun. Each apartment has the possibility of cross ventilation through two or three facades and enjoys views through the building and to the surrounding. A system of power efficient boilers is used in the building; solar panels on the roof heat water reducing energy consumption further. Underneath the building a parking garage on two levels provides 165 parking spaces. The ground floor offers room for 6 individual retail units. -36-

20. Telefónica’s Headquarters To the north of Madrid, at the end of a new urban development known as “Las Tablas”, the new Telefónica Headquarters, known as Distrito C, will house all the employees of the company – 14,000 people – in one single corporate campus, for the first time in the firm’s history. Las Tablas is a large residential area, with a low density, which was built very recently on private land, without any special intention behind the planning. Spatially and conceptually, Distrito C absorbs very little of this environment. An essential element of a Campus is its pedestrianised areas and this clearly is in contradiction with the new development of Las Tablas, given that that project was designed for low density and therefore puts the car forward as the main means of transport. Consequently, not only does the campus have a pedestrian structure: it forgoes the option of defensively closing off the perimeter from the surroundings, unlike much corporate architecture. The administrative buildings are distributed around a canonical patio or atrium. Between the four cubes at the corners of the building a canopy or roof is laid out between these cubes, to unite, cover and delimit the perimeter of the Campus. Covered with photovoltaic panels, this canopy of 3.8Ha captures energy – approximately 18% of the total consumed on the premises – and, more importantly, provides shadow for the façades and squares. The space of the four squares appears then as the geometric installation of a precise distribution of planes of vertical façades and a horizontal roof, which, at the same time, protects the reduced social universe into which the Company’s scale is fragmented, acting as a pedestrian access of its own and independent in each square. As a consequence, each of these four smaller ranges are connected to each other through the Main Atrium, which entrusts its vibration and environmental quality to this convergence, to the circulatory crossings between squares and to the activities in the public underground station, which, as it is set out in this space, not only guarantees the functionality of Distrito C, but symbolizes its public and open calling. This private and public central atrium establishes a spatial dialogue with the smaller squares and with the exterior public space as well, so as to connect, and not only conceptually, Las Tablas with Alcobendas. In order to achieve this, the two main buildings of the Campus are moved away. One being suspended from the roof and the other using the topographic profile of the land as a support, in such a way that the interior space of the atrium is in contact with and absorbs the exterior public space. The social connections of the atrium are therefore guaranteed as the Northern and Southern sides of the new district are freely connected. All of the buildings on the Campus are situated delicately over this framework of patios, squares and Atrium, surrounded by a dynamic double façade system that is common to the whole Campus. -43-

21. Carabanchel Housing, Dosmasuno Despite the guidelines drawn on the plots, places need to express their own personality, to arise naturally, to construct themselves. And concretely this one is aligned against a green area, against the concatenation of public spaces that link the old Carabanchel district with its forest through the new neighborhood. In response to these conditions, the dwellings are compressed onto one edge, onto a single linear piece, in search for the genus loci of the place, views and an optimal orientation in which east and west share the south, generating the limit of the activity, soothing the interior and defining the exterior. The dwellings are designed from an invariable core with a modulated addition which completes the requirements of the program. This fixed core is constructed attending to the surrounding views and sunlight, and its two main pieces, living and sleeping rooms, are stacked to the south limit, from which they are protected with a filter, relegating a services strip to the back side. Behind this strip, and like clouds drifting over the void, variations are introduced by the addition of programmatic pieces that form the dwellings of two and three bedrooms. The strict order achieved by the linear core is mathematically blurred into a shifting volume. Thus, the dwellings become “machines for living”, and they are designed as such, fitting surfaces and diminishing the transition areas of between rooms. Its construction responds to a necessity of industrial optimization. Therefore, the structure of the main body is constructed in concrete from a single high accuracy aluminum cast. At the same time, the light steel structure modules that constitute the additioned elements enable volumetric variations. This industrialized system facilitates the constructive process, avoiding rubbish and accelerating the implementation times.

22. Carabanchel Housing, Foreign Office Architects The site is a 100x45 parallelogram oriented north-south and limiting on the west with a new urban park and on the north, east and south with similar housing blocks, located into a new development in the south of Madrid. The regulation sets the number and type of units, that have to meet certain percentages of larger and smaller areas, and have a maximum height, but not the alignment within the rectangular plot. Given the adjacency to the future urban park and the North-South orientation of the site, the proposal was to compact the volume within the given height so that every unit will have double orientation East-West. In order to achieve this, the units become a sort of 13,40m long “tubes” that connect both façades and avoid any type of structure in the partitions between apartments. The residential units are therefore opened to two different gardens on each orientation, and are fully glazed in the façades. Each side of the building is provided with a 1.5m wide terrace along the full façade that will make possible a semi-exterior type of use during certain seasons. These terraces are enclosed with bamboo louvers mounted on folding frames that will provide with the necessary protection from the strong EastWest sun exposure, provide security to the units and open entirely to the side gardens when desired. There has been much talk in the past few years about exploring the potentials of customised residential typologies, and the possibility of a differentiated appearance of the units so that inhabitants would have the opportunity to acquire some form of personal identification with their residences. Even if the approach is a legitimate and interesting one, the experiments developed so far have evolved into rather arbitrary arrangements of difference where some of these identities become purely colourful and cosmetic. The risk of this approach is to fall into some sort of provincial ideology in which contemporary urban inhabitants are looking to their homes to be different and specific, while in fact one of the advantages of metropolitan living lies in the possibility of being anonymous, of losing the sort of rural or bourgeois identification between the home and its inhabitant.
These sort of developments absorb substantial resources in this sort of cosmetic contortions sometimes at the expense of quality of detail and quality of space. Our experiment with this project of low-cost residences was to provide the maximum amount of space, flexibility and quality to the residences, and to erase the visibility of the units and their differences into a single volume with a homogeneous skin able to incorporate some gradation of differences not dependent on the architect’s vision, but on each inhabitants desires.
