Opakované sledování může vést k pocitu REKURZE, kdy dobré umělecké dílo brzy začne divákovi odhalovat své kouzlo, ne nepodobné opakování slavné Fibonacciho řady, kdy záhy dosáhne poměrně přesné aproximace odhalující uspokojující proporce magického zlatého řezu: čísla 1,618...
Vid e o versus f i l m One of the basic differences between film and video art concerns presentation. We watch a film in the cinema, together with other audience members, or in a sitting room on TV. In both cases, our experience is limited by a beginning and an end. Contrary to this, video art is usually experienced during a visit to a gallery, where a piece of video art runs continuously in a loop and vistors can watch the presentation for as long as they wish. Repeated viewing can give rise to a sense of RECURSION, and a good work of art soon starts revealing its magic to the viewer, not unlike the famous Fibonacci sequence, which soon reaches a rather close approximation to the satisfying proportions of the magic Golden Ratio number 1,618...

1 : 1 = 1 | 2 : 1 = 2 | 3 : 2 = 1.5 | 5 : 3 = 1,666... | 8 : 5 = 1,6 | 13 : 8 = 1.625... 21 : 13 = 1,615... | 34 : 21 = 1,619... | 55 : 34 = 1,617... | 89 : 55 = 1,618...

Agency
The video art exhibition ‘Recursion‘ compares two cultural centres. With few exceptions, the participating artists represent the London and Prague art scenes. From London, there is a group of artists representing the young and middle generations, among whom is the latest Turner Prize winner, Laure Prouvost. From the Prague scene, the age range is wider. In both cases, the artists were selected with a view to introducing a representative and balanced sample, reflecting the range and diversity of contemporary means of expression in video art. In both places, video art has a strong tradition. Yet both locations have their own specific characteristics, determined by their historical and cultural development. In the past twenty years, London has become a multicultural centre of the globalized world. Partly, this is due to artists who arrive here from all corners of the world. The situation in Prague is different. Though the Prague art scene tries to be open, with a few exceptions it remains somewhat isolated and a little inward looking. The result of the meeting of artists from these two environments is an interesting confrontation. London video art is more epic, reflecting, with a certain nostalgia, the state before cultural globalization, and offering a critical view of the fragmentary nature of current reality. Creations from Prague reflect more the desire to step out of isolated, individualized life experience and reach universally applicable values, whether with the help of irony on the state of things, or by pointing out their spiritual dimensions, which are currently in short supply.
Agency is the activity of things and adaptive systems. Artists not only make art and convey knowledge and experiences. In the framework of agency their art also intervenes, instigating events and processes influencing the society and the world around us. In May 2014, the exhibition RECURSION 1.618 took place in the historic town of Třeboň in South Bohemia. Liberec is, therefore, its second venue. In the context of agency, RECURSION 1.618 is part of the project of a series of exhibitions initiated by the association WERHERE z.s., whose aim is the creation of a new Centre for Contemporary Art in Třeboň as part of the arts-led renewal of its historic centre. In this connection, the project highlights two periods of the town‘s prosperity, in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance, when Třeboň was also an important international cultural centre. It addresses the issue of the relation of the past to the present and suggests a possible way for physical renewal and the cultural and spiritual revival associated with it, responding to the famous period when Třeboň produced conditions for the creation of the highest art (the painter Master of Třeboň of the 14th century). The project invites a cultural and historical perspective on the present; it demonstrates both the need for this perspective and the current lack of it, and reflects the situation in society, which nowadays inevitably confronts artists, particularly young ones. To its members, especially the artists, the project also provides the opportunity to participate at the birth of this institution and to influence the process of its creation.

Terminologický posun umožňuje zařadit video do širších souvislostí zahrnujících kinematografické úvahy, mediální studia i reflexi současného vizuálního umění.
RECURSION 1.618 – current video art on the British and Czech scenes Po s i t i o n o f t h e m e d i u m The exhibition Recursion 1.618 presents a selection of British and Czech video art. The exhibition tries to examine the current art scenes in London and Prague. It also considers the position of video among other art forms and vis-à-vis the art of moving image in general. In its use and expression, video is so malleable that video art understood in terms of the origin, character, processing and presentation of a particular form of image is a too narrow category. It is theoretically richer and practically more useful to consider video in the context of moving image. This shift in terminology places video in a wider context, including cinematographic considerations, media studies and reflections on the contemporary visual arts. From its beginnings, video has been an adaptable and heterogeneous medium, continuously building relationships with other media. Through its inner constitution and its function within the wider range of creative art forms, video plays a part in the transformation of art and the role of art and artists in society. It is not merely a creative tool based on work with digital images, integrating technological process with artistic intentions, but it also becomes a cultural practice; it is part of information and communication structures and becomes a cultural tool. Opening new possibilities for making and exhibiting art creates new opportunities for social change and transformation − e.g. by challenging the influence and the social role of commercial television, the creative potential of television as a medium is being redefined. Its non-commercial, participative and community-based form ensures the public participation in the information process, the provision of space for minorities, the representation of different opinions and thus the development of civil rights. In this way, video could become a means for the decentralization of social communication or for defining and declaring gender identity. Therefore, the debate about video art in general is interlinked with the process of transition from an art practice, preoccupied by the formal concepts and qualities of the given medium, to a visual culture understood in its social, political and economic context. However, if we consider video with regard to its possible artistic potential, it is important to keep in mind its basic formal characteristics, from which the strategies and methods of distinctive creative processes arise. The most important seem to be the technical transformation of a moving image and the role of video as a means of contact and dialogue with the viewer. In the first instance, this involves experimenting with the medium in order to find out about its formal qualities enabling innovative artistic communication, and opening new ways of perception. Exploring the composition of the electromagnetic image, its technical complexity and structural potential, eventually connected with the option to digitize this image, is important for the period of transformation of video as a technological process into an art form. This is also related to the second special characteristic of video 7
S tím souvisí i druhá oblast specifik videa – oblast komunikace s divákem a možnosti prezentace daného díla. Tematizace kontaktu s divákem souvisí i s reflexí role diváctví, ať už z hlediska kinematografických scénických praktik, usilujících o jisté ponoření do obrazu a vedoucích až k identifikaci s pohledem aparátu, či z hlediska televizních zvyklostí, kdy vnímání obrazu je spíše rozptýlené a povrchní, někdy spojené i s dalšími „nediváckými“ činnostmi. Rozptýlenost a pohrouženost Divácky a instalačně heterogenní povahu videoartu si můžeme uvědomit v okamžiku, kdy vstoupíme do prostoru, v němž se výstava Rekurze 1.618 odehrává. Následně vstupujme do prostoru vymezeného konkrétním dílem a určitou dobu v něm můžeme prodlévat. Přitom se můžeme do daného díla emocionálně ponořit a také si uvědomit konkrétní metody 8
− the area of communication with the viewer and the presentation of art. The viewer can become an active participant; specific contact can be established and a certain kind of intimacy created to conduct a dialogue. The contact with the viewer becomes the subject of the work, reflecting the interactive role of the audience in art, whether in terms of cinematographic practices striving for a certain immersion into an image and leading all the way to identification with the camera view, or in terms of TV watching habits, where perception of an image is rather diffuse and superficial, sometimes associated with other “non-viewing“ activities. A characteristic feature of video art is a certain hybridity of the aforementioned reception modes. The situation is similar for the means of presentation – video installation as a way of exhibiting video art in a gallery falls somewhere between gallery art and film screening. D i s t ra c t i o n a n d co n te m p l a t i o n From the point of the audience and the installation, the heterogeneous nature of video art can be perceived the moment we enter the exhibition Recursion 1.618. The gallery space normally intended for the (ideal) visitor, who would walk among artworks displayed for aesthetic contemplation and inviting free and associative unfolding, has turned into a visually fragmented kaleidoscopic collage of images and projections, filled with incongruous sounds and hums emanating from individual exhibits. The moving images have various rhythms, sizes and light intensity; they entice us, yet our sight is unable to stay focussed on them for very long. In a certain sense, this corresponds with our experience of mass media, where stimulating impressions quickly alternate, providing little space for our emotions and thoughts to take hold. Nevertheless, we have to grasp that distraction and concentration exist as one continuum in which both polarities crossfade and interchange. When we have been focussing on something for too long, our attention might wander and the gallery conditions or the work itself may lead us into almost hypnotic states, and so on. This oscillation happens within the subjective framework of trying to cope with the multitude of stimuli, or the situation may be specially created and placed deliberately in the social and cultural space of the gallery. The initial atmosphere of the exhibition Recursion 1.618 is indefinite and confusing - we must first delve into an environment of various noises, flickering lights and vibrations. After attuning ourselves to this environment, we can start finding our way: we walk from one video installation to another, viewing them from various angles. This gives us the chance to realise how, depending on the form of the projection, the circumstances and nature of our perception change the tone and sometimes even the significance of the work. We enter the space defined by a particular piece and we may linger in it for some time. At the same time, we can delve into the given work emotionally. We can also learn about specific methods of working with images, about references to the wider context of film and television practices. We can contemplate the definition of genres and ultimately the context
of the related institutional practices. The real movement among the works alternates with the virtual movement conveyed by moving images that channel our perception and draw us into their own spatial and dynamic field. The physical, sensory-emotional and contextually intellectual aspects of the viewing merge and create a diffused whole, which is difficult to grasp. Co n ce n t ra t e d s i g h t While walking through an exhibition, we are usually guided by the spacial arrangement of the installation, or we may be attracted by visually strong works. At the same time, in our reflections on the experience, specific features and aspects of individual works come to mind. We notice their semantic content and context and to a certain extent also the overall curatorial intent. In the case of Recursion 1.618, this is based on examining the relationship between video art and film, television and computer technologies as well as other methods of image making, and exploring these relationships with regard to the social and cultural conditions of the given art scene. In addition to considering the technical and technological aspects of various media genres, it is also necessary to look at their specific relation to the narrative, illusionistic and material aspects of communication through images, and how, in the case of the exhibition, they influence the presentation of art to the public. With this definition of various media, a more general question arises about the art of moving image separated from the context of presentation. Moving images may be mediated by film, video, television, the internet, etc. The purity of the medium is constantly challenged – film breaks free from institutionalized cinematographic culture, and conversely, the media‑like elements of video, television, and computer graphics interfere with traditional aesthetic qualities and stimulate changes of formal composition, expression and function. In this way, the current media merge and influence each other. From such a point of view, all the works on show are actually hybrids. In the individual works, we can observe different levels of emphasis on various specific characteristics and conventions of the given medium and realise that the aforementioned inner confusion is of a stylistic nature, which is in turn resolved by the informed use of the language of the given medium with all its layers of meaning, revealed in various quotations, references, hints and allusions. The work of Laure Prouvost is an example of this complicated contextualization. Her videos are characteristic of a distinctive approach to film convention, unusual picture editing and the narrative process. This creates a collage-like, layered narrative and pictorial structure that draws the viewer into an ambiguous play, intentionally open to interpretation, in which the power of images and narratives blends with historical and literary references. Her video Charlie the Dog should be understood in the context of this strategy. It is part of a story about the artist’s grandfather, a conceptual artist who got lost in a tunnel, which he had dug himself and from which he was supposed 9
sám vykopal a odkud jej nyní má tento pes přivést zpět. Absurdní příběh je podán v podobě dokumentárního, téměř domácího videa, zcizeného ovšem divácky obrazově i narativně konfuzním podáním, takže celek působí zvláštně zkreslujícím a znejisťujícím dojmem.
to be rescued by a dog. This absurd story is delivered in the form of a documentary, almost like a home video hijacked by the pictorially and narratively confusing presentation, so that the whole work creates a strangely distorted and disturbing impression.
V díle Uncanny Valley zkoumají téma „přirozenosti“ a možnosti jejího uchopení prostřednictvím specifických technik. Vycházejí z divadelní tradice práce s výrazem a reprezentacemi emocí.
The collaborating artists Anja Kirschner and David Panos have a wide contextual range. In their work Uncanny Valley, they explore the topic of “naturalness” and possible ways of expressing it using specific techniques. They acknowledge theatrical tradition, working with representations of emotions. They are interested in how facial expressions can be methodically seized and “trained”, how by a particular technical means and special apparatus the movement of a human figure can be recorded and processed and how the natural movement of human masses can be generated using CGI. Shots of theatrically made-up faces of the protagonists are interspersed with views of stage settings and images of computer-animated crowds. Topics of the history of theatre and film acting are connected with the topic of CGI images; the differences between the natural, seemingly natural and artificial are blurred. Here arise the theme of self‑presentation and possibilities of “uninhibited expression” through a specific language − whether of the “Shakespearian tradition” or the language of image sequences. In this case, video is presented as a structured medium adopting the traditions of literary and dramatic arts culture.
V daném smyslu by bylo možno interpretovat i její video The More or Less of Miley Cyrus, kde jsou na sebe vrstveny záběry Miley Cyrus převzaté z MTV, snímek přírodní struktury a schéma Velkého skla Marcela Duchampa. Na sebe a do sebe jsou tak kopírovány obrazy, které fungují v různých modech recepce – umělecká díla i příroda nás vyzývají k smyslovému a emocionálnímu zakotvení a kontemplaci, zatímco MTV produkuje a dodává obrazy určené ke konzumaci, obrazy plynoucí a rozptylující. Video Clunie Reid tematizuje tuto rozptylující sílu mediálních obrazů a dovádí ji ad absurdum: schopnost naší percepce se dostává na samu mez, střídání a překrývání obrazů vytváří až stroboskopické efekty. Video nás vizuálně přitahuje i odpuzuje zároveň.
Otázku „techniky“ tvorby, souvislosti mezi výtvarnou tvorbou a vzděláváním a vztah prostředků jazykových a vizuálních tematizuje Redmond Entwistle v díle Walk-Through. Film rekonstruuje diskuse odehrávající se v ateliéru konceptuálního umělce Michaela Ashera na California Institute of the Arts.
The question of the “technique” of creation, the connection between creation and education and the relationship of linguistic and visual means is the subject of Redmond Entwistle’s piece WalkThrough. The film reconstructs the discussion which took place in the studio of the conceptual artist Michael Asher at the California Institute of the Arts. It is a reminder of the history of art, the moment of opening up the education of students − with particular emphasis on the importance of discussion as a central educational practice − the certain institutionalization of conceptual art and, at the same time, a film account of the relationship of language and visual forms as conditions determining the possibilities of artistic expression. Working with history, and to a certain extent also with a visual archive, are contemporary creative strategies. Mark Aerial Waller, in his work Phantom Avantgarde, works with existentially attuned films from the 1960s. He manipulates the film material and creates a collage and photograms, which he sometimes rearranges in new spatially scenic compositions. The video Phantom Avantgarde uses subtitles from the book Journey to the End of the Night by Louise-Ferdinand Céline. The visual and textual material is rearranged into new configurations that transform and expand the semantic relationships associated with the original works. The approach based on the processing of the abovementioned visual material is a somewhat historically inquisitive process, but at the same time it is a survey of a particular genre and its means of expression. This is obvious also in case of Rachel Reupke and her video 10 Seconds or Greater. Here, the visual language of television
Zcizující a apropriativní obrazové strategie využívá i George Barber ve videu The Freestone Drone, v němž kombinuje filmový žánr pracující s „nalezenou stopáží“, doplněnou speciálně k tomu určenými záběry.
advertising is demonstrated and explored. Stock footage with the themes of “communication”, “relaxation”, and “healthy lifestyle” provides an opportunity for working with the aesthetic of the clear, idealized imagery of advertising and image banks and of bringing into play the reflected game of their “affirmative distortion”. Work with staged or found images from advertising or mass media is also characteristic for Clunie Reid. She is interested in the type of pictures that are a commodity in their own way and are produced and manufactured rather than created. Clunie Reid combines the images, manipulates them digitally, re-prints them and creates collages out of them. Her images have the character of visual information that may be constructed or deconstructed. By the process of distressing the “matter” of the image, its perception and interpretation, she attempts to demystify the apparent obviousness and natural character of these media products. Her video The More or Less of Miley Cyrus could also be interpreted in this sense. In it, she layers shots of Miley Cyrus taken form MTV, a picture of a natural structure and diagrams of Marcel Duchamp’s The Large Glass. Images are copied on top of and into each other, functioning in various modes of reception − works of art and nature invite us to sensory and emotional contexture and contemplation, while MTV produces and delivers to us a distracting flow of images intended for consumption. Clunie Reid’s video takes this disturbing force of the media to absurdity. Our perception is pushed to the very limit; the alternating and overlapping of images creates almost stroboscopic effects. The video attracts and repulses at the same time. In the context of work with video and moving images, artists often do not differentiate between the material they filmed themselves and that which appears in the media. Pictures and audio material can be sampled, adjusted, layered, etc. A certain “low-tech“ quality need not necessarily be a problem. An example of this approach is While it Lasts by Hannah Perry, who produces collages of images from social media, commercials and abstract image elements. In its entirety, the result is difficult to interpret; yet it provides a personal emotional testimony of the author. Here, video is introduced as a tool and medium for direct visual communication, for which time, rhythm and editing is of the essence, and which would be hard to present in another form. Alienating and appropriative visual strategies are used by George Barber in his video The Freestone Drone, where he combines the genre of film and working with “found footage”, supplemented by specially made shots. Here, video appears in its documentary and rather “low-tech” form. Another aspect of Barber’s video installation is the “inappropriately” romantic music and a voiceover that provides a poetically philosophical commentary on a drone, talks about it and gives it a voice. The drone is personified and presented as a somewhat infantile subject which experiences and reflects its own existence. George Barber is associated with the scratch video movement, which deals critically with video as part of mass communication defined by television but is also informed by gallery exhibition practice. The institutional critique associated with this approach and movement, like the strategy of appropriation, is inspired by the situationist concept of “détournement” and can refer to film compositions made by Guy Debord. 11
Jistou situacionistickou asociaci lze najít v díle, které Matthew Noel‑Tod nazval Season in Hell. Zde skupina infantilizovaných avatarů – zástupců jednotlivých lidských ras – krouží okolo ohněm obklopeného globu nesoucího nápis In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni.
Some situationist associations can be found in the work that Matthew Noel-Tod calls Season in Hell. Here, a group of infantilized avatars – representatives of different human races − circle around a globe surrounded by fire, carrying a sign reading In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni. This palindrome has its own poetic and magical connotations and it also makes a reference to the Guy Debord movie of the same name. Movement in a circle, literary and semantic, connected with “consumption”, may be seen as a metaphor for moving images and as a critique of capitalist society. Nevertheless, the critical role and importance of the message may also be associated with the emphasis on the quality of sound and picture. In his video Speech Bubble, Adam Leech focuses on the relationships among visually distinctly elaborated images; the narrative, poetical and literary characteristics of the story and its auditory presentation are emphasised by the richly modulated speech of the protagonist. Although the socioeconomic context of this sketch from the corporate environment of companies engaged in high-tech technologies and products can only be guessed at, it refers to “unreal” aspects of our current economy. This is a social critique, but the autonomy of the image itself and the accompanying audio carries the emotions and participates in defining the work’s message and meaning. Video is a somewhat intimate form of expression, open to uninhibited personal communication. Maija Timonen tries to record and express a dream in her work Total Atmospheric Mean. Through camera and mobile phone videos, she stages and narrates a meditatively essayistic situation in which associative memories are joined with illustrative and interpretative pictorial material which is both real and appropriated. In the video, cinematographic narration is combined with an existentially felt self-presentation. For the difficult‑to-grasp and intimately self-representational tone of the video to work, it is essential that the camera never shows the face of the protagonist narrator. This also allows the audience to fully appreciate the subtle modulation of her voice and its specific qualities as it speaks to us. In terms of production processes, Sebastian Buerkner and his piece Album Matter occupy a distinctive place in this exhibition of video art because he is showing what is in fact a film animation. In some sections his visual language refers to 1920s experimental films and the kinetic light projections of the 1930s. He also combines these influences with the world of computers and net art because the work is not intended only for video projection, but can just as well function on a computer screen. On this basis, Sebastian Buerkner develops the distinct strategy of exploring the syntax of pictorial material and the forms of its representation, which is consciously playing with the viewer’s perception. He creates a rhythmically disparate structure, with the slow motion sequences punctuated by almost stroboscope-like moments. The musical accompaniment is constructed in a similar way, with pronounced deep and conversely high tones. Visual and auditory
Animovat v tomto širším smyslu můžeme i reálné předměty. Ještě specifičtěji bychom jako práci s nepohyblivým, ale zároveň temporalizovaným obrazem mohli označit video Zbyňka Baladrána The Microscope and Telescope of Time. Vidíme prošlapané podlahy veřejných budov označené barevnou bezpečnostní páskou, varující chodce před možným klopýtnutím a zraněním, nad nimi se vznášejí a rotují průhledná slova‑objekty, např. Kroky, Roku, Roky, Zbylo, jež v jiné podobě vyslovují a zviditelňují téma vyjádřené sérií obrazů.
components are pulled together; while the oval shapes are analogous with deep tones, pointed shapes correspond with high ones. The result stretches between the contrasting sensory and expressive polarities that are held together by a disciplined use of the formal language. Yet animation does not necessarily have to follow the above‑mentioned classical cinematic forms; it could just as well work with the general principle of the art of moving image. In this broader sense, real objects can be animated, too. In his video installation Permanent Illusion of Stability, Daniel Hanzlík sets the exhibited object − a chair, into jerky motion by projecting over it an oscillating picture of it shadow. The object and the projection are connected in one image, which in effect is as much a moving picture as a picture temporalized by its rhythmic transformation. Even more specifically, Zbyněk Baladrán’s video The Microscope and Telescope of Time could be labelled as a work with an immovable and yet temporalized image. His childhood memories are related as a series of photographs, subtitles and fading divisions, which the artist composes in front of the camera and thus makes the film. Subtitles give the photographic pictures a commentary and offer reflections on the influence of narrative strategies on the mental position and mood of the viewer. Shooting a video of static photographs and their presentation during video projection could also be understood as a thematisation of the editing process. The means and ways of constructing pictorial and narrative structures are shown in their immediate and reflected positions. The relationship between word, image and time is also the subject of works by Jan Mladovský. In his video Years of Steps, Mladovský combines static shots with the movement of visualised words. We see pictures of worn out floors of public buildings marked by coloured security sticky tapes, warning pedestrians against the danger of tripping and possible injury. Floating above are rotating words-objects like Steps, Years and Remain that in another way express and visualise the meaning of the images, which are accompanied by a rhythmic sound of steps. Sequences of simple shots with a minimalistic feel marked by slight variations and complemented by a similarly repetitive soundtrack create a distinctive visual meditation on the passage of time. Radim Labuda’s video the Armless Businessman builds on the tension between image and sound and between static and dynamic moments within the structure of the work itself. During the projection, the scene does not change. We see a man in a suit standing in front of a pool; the only source of movement is the wind bending palm fronds and flapping the empty sleeves of his jacket. The almost static shot is made dynamic by a cinematically styled soundtrack and a read commentary with distinctively structured rhythm and drama. The voiceover, done in the style of sports broadcast, provides information on economic collapse. The video is a critical commentary on the impersonal business environment. 13
pojatý spíše v duchu sportovního přenosu, podává informace o ekonomickém kolapsu. Video je kritickým komentářem odosobněného prostředí byznysu. Téma animace a lidského vnímání v jeho proměnlivosti rozvíjí Viktor Takáč v díle Are You Telling Me. Nejvíce dokumentární charakter má na této přehlídce snímek A Night at The Baka od Petra Zubka. Video zachycuje slavnost pygmejů kmene Baka, odehrávající se v pralese jihovýchodního Kamerunu. Jako divákům se nám nedostává žádného výkladu – počáteční sekvence se otevírá roztřesenými záběry cesty nočním pralesem, jen spoře osvětleným ruční svítilnou, vidíme místo setkání, tanec okolo ohně, slyšíme rytmické zpěvy a bubnování, obrazy se čas od času ponoří do tmy, charakter ani dějovou strukturaci slavnosti nejsme schopni určit, snímek po nějaké době končí opět záběry noční cesty pralesem, vzdalujeme se od místa slavnosti, její zvuky zanikají ve zvucích pralesa. Video nás tedy obrazově a emočně přenáší do reálných míst, vlastní charakter scény i fragmentární způsob jejího podání ji proměňují v obrazy až takřka snové. Vztah světla a stínu, projekce a času je základní fotografickou i kinematografickou situací, práce se stínovou siluetou odkazuje ke klasickým výtvarným 14
Viktor Takáč in the work Are You Telling Me explores the topic of animation and the unpredictability of human perception. His video installation involves a rotating cylinder and three static panoramic photographs. Each photograph takes up one third of the cylinder. The movement of the cylinder accelerates. The pictures first start to merge, and when a certain velocity is reached, the direction of rotation begins to reverse visually. The optical illusion of reverse motion is based on linking cinematography and its physical kinetic processes with the physiological properties of human sight. The resulting stroboscopic effect, achieved by changing the frequency of revolution of the individual pictures, is an intensification of the special cinematographic properties of moving images. An important feature of video is the opportunity for instantaneous recordings of current events, as in a standard documentary in the usual sense, or recordings of events with an orchestrated character. Of the works in this exhibition, Petr Zubek’s A Night at The Baka is the one with the most documentary-like character. The video captures the Pygmy tribe Baka people celebrating in the jungle of southeastern Cameroon. As spectators, we get no commentary here − the initial sequence opens with shaky shots from the journey through the nocturnal jungle, only dimly illuminated by a handheld torch. We can see the meeting place, the dancing around the fire; we can hear rhythmic chanting and drumming, and from time to time images emerge and disappear in the darkness. We are unable to determine the character or the narrative structure of the festivities, and after some time the video again shows shots from the night time journey through jungle; we are moving away from the place of festivities, the sounds are dissolving into the sounds of the jungle. Visually and emotionally, the video takes us to real places, yet the character of the scene and the fragmentary means of its presentation transform the images into dream-like pictures. Daniela Baráčková also uses the tension between the realism of a “documented” scene and its vague, almost secret significance. In her work Skansen she depicts herself sitting in a room in an openair museum. She is sitting among female manikins of all ages and takes the same rigid posture as them. At a certain point, she gets up, comes to a girl figure with a doll and whispers something in her ear; then she returns to her place and adopts again her position among the manikins. We do not know what message this is. The scene is simple; the video is used as the means to document an action open in meaning and context. Martin Zet’s video called Satan could be characterized similarly. We can see the artist, sitting on a rooftop terrace watching a satellite dish. At a certain point, as if intrigued by something, he gets up and gradually raises his arms over his head. He watches the movement of his own shadow on the surface of the dish and in this way attempts to create an expressive and yet simple moving figure, ending with a distinctive silhouette. The relationship of light
Video je doplněno hudebním doprovodem, skladbou La La skupiny The Residents, repetitivní, komerčně a popově působící znělkou. Heterogenní formální konstituce snímku, kombinující v přímé i odkazové rovině triviální s experimentálním, slouží k rozostření vyznění díla, jež může zahrnovat neurčitě erotické konotace, nespecifikované úvahy o umění i poznámky k charakteru a povaze videa jakožto média. Obrazem se můžeme nechat unášet, vnímat změny barevného naladění a v modu jistého pasivního pohroužení sledovat vzestupy i poklesy horských pásem, pohyby evokující pocit pomalého přeletu nad terénem. Obrazová a emoční imerse je však zároveň rušena a zcizována kovově působícími chvějivými zvuky a „chybami“ v záznamu či přenosu dat, které obraz deformují, rozostřují a do zvukové stopy přidávají zesílené šumy a praskání. Pavel Mrkus v tomto díle vědomě pracuje s modalitami vnímání,
and shadow, projection and time, are the basic photographic and cinematographic situations. The work with a shadow silhouette refers to classical artistic and theatrical methods. The title of the work may even suggest an interpretation referring to horror film motifs, where shadow silhouettes are often used to indicate an evil spirit indirectly or lend the scene a certain menace. However, the overall tone should not be seen as visual quotation. It is more open, as it is permeated with a kind of absurdly ironic play with a metaphorical motif. Here, the objectivity of presentation is joined with the wider context, which enriches a simple and emotionally ambivalent situation with a promise of many‑layered meanings. Jiří David in his video Resident(s) elaborates on a message which is rather diffuse in meaning. The scene shows a slug nearing a figurine made out of empty doll’s clothes. The slug briefly explores the figure and lightly touches it, and then turns away from it. The song La La by the group The Residents, a repetitive commercial pop jingle, accompanies the video. The heterogenous formal constitution of the piece, combining the trivial with the experimental on both the direct and the reference level, serves to distort the tone of the work, which might include vaguely sexual connotations as well as non‑specific reflections on art commenting on the character and nature of video as a media. The documentary video genre may be of an exploratory character. In his work Criterium, Tomáš Werner presents this approach. We see a bird’s‑eye view of a street with bikers riding in opposite directions. Their speed is very similar, the distances between them are almost regular and they meet in approximately the same places. This creates a certain natural repetitive structure, giving this realistic recording a kind of minimalist poetry. As a documentary medium, video fixes as well as mechanises our gaze, thus enabling us to get a view “under” the surface of recorded reality and to discern more abstract structural patterns, which would otherwise stay unnoticed under our “natural” observation. Artists who work with electromagnetic images in digitized form do not necessarily subscribe to this approach to video as a record of immediate reality. Images can be adjusted, transformed, abstracted; they can stage reality, changing it into fiction. This is the case of Pavel Mrkus’s work Next Planet. In a wide-angle shot, a deserted hilly landscape opens before us. The format, the visual arrangement and the slow motion allow full sensory and emotional immersion in the picture. We can let ourselves drift with the image, perceive the changes in the colour scheme and, in a mood of passive absorption, follow the ups and downs of mountain ranges, movements evoking the feeling of slow flight over the terrain. However, the pictorial and emotional immersion is disturbed and alienated by metallic vibrating sounds and ”errors” in the recording or transfer of data, which deform, distort and add an amplified hum and crackle to the soundtrack. 15
In this work, Pavel Mrkus intentionally modulates perception, bringing these modulations into play and giving them meaning, as they lend a sequence of pictures a certain disturbing ambivalence. They express the hidden tension between the natural and the artificial, between the manifestation of reality and fiction. In his projection Horizon, Jan Stolín presents an abstract approach to the art of moving image. This is animation of a minimalist geometric composition, based on the sequencing of simple elements. The composition has not only a spatial structure, but also a temporal one. On a blue background, we can see parallel lines − green, purple, pink and blue - which cover the whole area of the picture. The ratio of the colours changes so that the image has a varying colour scheme. Groups of lines move up and down in a certain rhythm; sometimes they move towards each other, sometimes in parallel. A shimmering structure of parallel lines is thus created, varying in colour and optical tension. Another specific sensory impact comes from the visual effect created by the constant alteration of coloured lines, which creates the impression that the surface is moving not only vertically but horizontally, too. This video works with heterogenous moments. Sequences of strong optical tension are interspersed with calmer passages; the fluctuating movement of lines takes place at a rather calm rhythm, while the soundtrack consists of a strong technical‑sounding hum. The abstract moving picture almost touches the physicality of perception. D i f f e r i n g s t ra te g i e s , co n d i t i o n s a n d p r e r e q u i s i t e s The Recursion 1.618 exhibition is based on the comparison of the London and Prague art scenes. If, based on the presented works, we should get a view of their character and approach to video art, certain differences between the two groups are apparent. The basic definition is determined by the fact that both groups seem to be structured differently. With few exceptions, the London scene is represented by artists for whom video, or moving image in general, tend to be their basic means of expression. The repertoire of the artists selected to represent the Czech side is usually somewhat wider. These primary conditions can be relatively clearly observed in the ways the two groups use the media of the moving image. In case of the British artists, the informed and professionally developed use of the language of moving image is evident. They are more concerned with building up a pictorial story, with cinematic and narrative techniques, and with the whole media context and the imagery it generates. Their work reflects the up-to-date creative strategies, relevant critical practices and corresponding social outreach. They use the full range of creative means, currently at the disposal of moving image media, including appropriate frameworks of social conditions, institutions, rules and judgments. Artists representing the Czech scene consider video rather as an instrument of communication. Conscious stylistic work with forms of the moving image is here less evident. Video is seen in its immediate communicative form rather than as a stylistically and formally sophisticated set of expressive and creative practices.
Odpověď, je-li tento rozdíl dán jinými podmínkami a způsobem uměleckého školení a sociokulturním kontextem, či zdali jde o odlišné strategie v uchopení daného média, není smyslem tohoto textu ani výstavy. R e k u r z e 1. 618
Whether this disparity is due to different conditions, a different manner of artistic training and/or possibly different socio-cultural context, or whether they are distinct strategies in understanding and using the media is not the concern of this text or the exhibition. What is important that both groups provide a common context and thus in a sense “illuminate” their own terms and conditions. Gallery projections To understand the exhibition Recursion 1.618, the topic of the moving image prejection in the gallery space is important. Two approaches to the moving image meet here − cinematographic, requiring a projection system and a darkened room, allowing the viewer to concentrate on an image; and television, which is not determined by any specific space or mode of attention. The visitors should have the chance to concentrate on the individual works, but at the same time they must have the freedom to move around the gallery and time to structure their visual experience. On the one hand their perception may be disturbed, but on the other, they are much more aware of the staged quality of the presentation of art by means of projection. What would be understood as disruptive in the cinema becomes part of the presentation and the subject of the exhibition itself − we see images but simultaneously also many tilted surfaces and pictorial fragments. We see the artworks not in isolation but together with other projections and in their shared context, and so on. These conditions are limiting, but they can also be dealt with as time and location specific characteristics that allow the “technically reproduced work” to acquire the character of a unique artefact, thanks to this specific form of staging. Therefore, if an exhibition of moving images varies the installation arrangement, or the place or conditions of the projections, then the exhibited works may also acquire a new tone. (In the case of the Recursion 1.618 exhibition, this transformation has already taken place. Its previous installations in May this year reacted to the space of the Gallery “Pivovar Bohemia Regent” in Třeboň, where the show was organised in cooperation with Anifilm, the international festival of animated film, which undoubtedly strengthened its cinematographic contextualisation.) R e cu r s i o n 1. 618
Whether the position of video art on the contemporary artistic scene and its future outlook as an art form is determined with regard to cinematographic practices (as is often the case in gallery exhibitions), or in connection with the expansion of new media, one thing is certain thanks to this show: video art keeps coming back. Moreover, if this recursion can be expressed in form of the golden ratio − as indicated in the title of the exhibition − then it is a return in the ideal form.
