My Impression of the Africaday! By Pangmashi E. N Yenkong Pangmashi E. N Yenkong is a student in the Research Master of the African Studies Centre, University of Leiden. Looking back at the Africaday 2010 celebrations, I am quite elated to say that it is one of my most exciting moments in The Netherlands. As an “African”, I was very curious when I heard of the event. My curiosity stemmed from the fact that I initially thought it was a day for Africa’s sons and daughters to meet and celebrate “Africa”. When I attended the occasion, my impressions were contrary to the African perception of an “Africaday celebration” I was very delighted when I was asked to express my views about this exciting event. In analysing this event, I believe everything fitted in its right place. The way the event was coordinated, the activities of the volunteers and guest speakers and participants, all culminated to make this occasion a worthwhile event. As an African scholar, I greatly benefitted from the several workshops that were organized both in the morning and afternoon sessions. I attended the workshop on “From Copenhagen to Africa: Climate for change”, and “Developing Africa: it’s the economy, stupid!” These workshops in a nutshell increased my knowledge for Africa considerably as it gave an insight to the current crisis in Africa. Issues relating to development, access to justice, poverty, corruption and embezzlement, education, wars and the pernicious human rights violations experienced by many African countries in general. Reflecting on these workshops, and the speeches delivered by various dignitaries such as Bert Koenders who is former minister of development cooperation, Lovemore Tambo chairman of ZCTU and African football player of the year George Weah, it means a lot for the future of Africa tomorrow. The speeches delivered, threw light to Africa’s contemporary problems. Everyone who attended this event at least is conversant with the current crisis in Africa today. The question as to how to solve the various dilemmas plaguing the African continent was discussed and various mechanisms to resolve some of these problems literally was provided in the various workshops. Apart from the workshops, other interesting issues such as the various photo and painting exhibitions, several working NGOs in Africa, and the information market were among some of the interesting things to see on this day. During lunch break, I was surprised when I visited the canteen and realized that there were a variety of Africa’s delicacies and drinks. Some participants were dressed in various attires that one could easily identify his\her country by just simply looking at him. People were colourfully dressed in various traditional African attires. But the question that popped up in my mind was; who is an African? The event was made up of a combination of people of all races. I was filled with elation when I saw a Dutchman dressed in our traditional regalia. What caught my attention was basically his style of dressing. Only a native from my village could dress in such traditional style. Because I could no longer conceal my curiosity, I walked up to him and had a good chat. I was perplexed when he told me that he comes from my region in the Cameroons and we both communicated in my native tongue. Later, from my position at the balcony, I could get a better picture of the events of this day. I realized that everyone seemed excited and I could see people embracing and shaking hands with each other and saying ‘how do you do?’ I could not help but to think of Louis Armstrong’s melody titled ‘What a wonderful world’.

The “Daughters of Africa” closed the occasion with a musical performance. The dancers represented the various countries in Africa. In their songs, they expressed messages of morality, values and the plight suffered by African girls in contemporary times such as female circumcision and early marriages and lack of education. The girl’s also exhibited the most popular traditional African dances that carried with it a social and historical significance. African songs from popular African artist like Manu Dibango from Cameroon, Salif Keita from Mali, Brenda Fasie and Miriam Makeba from South Africa were among some of the songs played by these talented girls. The girls also used the drum, which is considered a symbol of solidarity in African music and dance. From my perspective, the usage of the drum is an indication that irrespective of the fact we all come from different countries and continents, and having different cultures, we all share something in common; that thing is the love that connects us all. Having experienced this wonderful occasion, I wish to appeal to the organizers of subsequent Africaday celebrations to at least use more than one day in celebrating the activities of this day. This is an occasion that leaves lasting impressions in the minds of its participants taking into consideration the activities of the day. I wish to extend my heartfelt appreciation to all the volunteers and organizers who made this wonderful a success.

A master course on 'Gender Issues in ICT' door Th.P.van der Weide Theo van der Weide is professor of Information Retrieval and Information Systems Digital Security at the Institute for Computing and Information Sciences, Radboud University Nijmegen. In the context of the cooperation between the public universities in Uganda and the Radboud University of Nijmegen, he organised a course on Gender Issues in ICT. The objective of this 'Gender Issues in ICT' course is to enhance gender awareness with young academics in the field of ICT, meaning training them to become knowledgeable and sensitive about where and how gender related traditional patterns can play a significant role within ICT applications in society. The objectives for this course are defined as follows: Students 1. can relate gender issues in ICT to economic values 2. will have a common understanding of gender issues in ICT 3. are able to apply gender awareness a. in practical situations b. at different levels of education c. in the context of urban and rural environment d. from a global point of view 4. to a. improve that practical situation using ICTs b. set up a research theme in the area of gender & ICT To achieve these objectives, the course is organized as a practicum. The participants are divided into smaller groups. Each group chooses a socially relevant subject for further research by the course material provided. After the course these research results are presented to a representative from society. The educational approach In order to motivate our educational approach, we use the architectural model of competence as proposed by Roe (1999). The architecture, adapted to the context of the course, is displayed in
10
Figure 1. In this figure we position how we divided the course in 3 phases: (1) preparation, (2) the course week, and (3) the assignment.

The preparation phase of the course brings students from various backgrounds to the entry level of the second phase. During the course week of the second phase, the students acquire the first 2 objectives, and partly objective 3 (see previous sub section). During this week KSAs (knowledge, skills and attitudes) are strengthened, by practical exercises the participant develop basic competences. During phase 3, we focus on the competencies that were defined in the previous sections. These competences are reflected in objectives 3 and 4. To train these competences, the participants work on a practical assignment where gender issues play an essential role in an ICT application. Set-up of the course The course (6 ec) is divided in 3 phases (1 ec, European credit, equals 28 working hours; so 6 ec corresponds to 168 h). As this course is intended to be accessible for a broad audience, we have chosen to work with a delayed admission procedure during the preparation phase of the course. The idea is that the admissions requirements are formally checked only after phase 1 of the course. The advantage is that interested students can try to enter the course at the risk of a small investment during this first phase. The preparation phase (1 ec) The intention of this first phase is to bring the participants, possibly from different backgrounds, on the entry level for the fundamental phase, reaching a common understanding of basic ICT 11

and
of
gender
issues.
The students will also be assigned a case and have to make a description and requirements analysis. For this purpose, the students team up in smaller groups. Their different backgrounds are used to form effective multi-disciplinary teams. In terms of the architectural competence model, this phase will bring the participants to the required disposition: their abilities, personality traits and biographical traits. The fundamental phase (1 ec) During the course week we offer internationally oriented lectures in the morning. The afternoon is meant for practical study and further detailing of their research issues in their case using the material offered in the morning sessions. Every day a closing session is organized to evaluate and give feedback. Hereafter, the students make an analysis of their case needs described in a project plan, along with an improvement statement, and the proposed implementation steps. It will also indicate how and why ICT is being used, and how gender issues are taken care of.
Figure 2. The three levels of the Management Hierarchy To make the proposed solution sustainable, the three level approach is used, as described in the management hierarchy (the control pyramid). The participants have to explain their contribution to each of these three levels. The strategic level is for long-term decisions. The tactical level is for mid-term decisions following the plans from the strategic level, conveying the feedback from the operational level. On the operational level we find the short-term decisions, there where individual entities are handled. In terms of risk management, the costs of a wrong decision on the operational level is relatively low; the costs of a wrong decision at the strategic level is high. The practical phase (4 ec) In this final phase the project plan is carried out. The students work on their assignments in teams working highly independent in many cases, especially when it concerns a rural area project. After

finishing their project, the participants summarize their findings in their project report, including their personal reflections. For more information on this project, see: http://uganda.cs.ru.nl/

Promoties Februari - Juni 2010 A War of Words. Dutch Pro-Boer Propaganda and the South African War (1899-1902) Dhr. J.J.V. Kuitenbrouwer Vrijdag 5 februari 2010 UvA Geschiedenis Promotor: dhr. prof. dr. Bron: UvA Persvoorlichting

Aspects of the management of children with cancer in Malawi Israëls, T. 28 april 2010 UvA Promotores: Kraker, de J.; Molyneux, E.M.; Reis, R.; Caron, H.N.

The Middle Miocene Climate Transition in the Central Mediterranean Anja Mourik 10 mei 2010 Universiteit Utrecht Faculteit Geowetenschappen Prof. dr.
A grammar of Sheko Anne Christie Hellenthal dinsdag 15 juni 16.15 uur Universiteit Leiden Faculteit Geesteswetenschappen Promotor: prof.dr.

Proefschrift Recensie Mulemi, Benson A. 2010. Coping with Cancer and Adversity. Hospital Ethnography in Kenya. Proefschrift, Afrika Studiecentrum.
Coping with cancer and adversity is een goed leesbaar proefschrift.

Thesis Review Anika May, 2008. “Teaching Peace, transforming Conflict? Exploring Participants' Perceptions of the Impact of informal Peace Education Training in Uganda”. Leiden: African Studies Centre Annotation: African Studies Collection; 2nd prize of the 2007 ASC/CODESRIA/NiZa Africa Thesis Award
By Virginie Tallio Centro de Estudos Africanos, ISCTE-IUL
[email protected] The book “Teaching peace, transforming conflict?” is based on the M.A. thesis of Anika May. It explores the perceptions of the participants to a peace education program in Uganda and in this regard, crosses several disciplines: educational sciences, political sciences, sociology, development studies and ethnic studies. The research being inscribed within the framework of the Participatory Action Research (PAR), its objectives are twofold: to investigate the impact of a peace education program implemented at the Makerere University and to propose innovative solutions for improving the AVP (Alternatives for Violence Program). In that respect, Anika May followed a cohort of participants (before, during and after the training) and participated herself to some AVPs in Kampala and in the provinces. The book is divided in six chapters. After an introductive chapter, a second one contextualizes the investigation by explaining the violence settings in Uganda. The third one asserts its theoretical background and the following one exposes the methodology chosen by the author. The fifth chapter is the longest one and presents the results of the study, drawn on larges extracts of interviews. It explains first the background in which the AVP took place: the experiences of violence encountered by the participants and their expectations concerning their participation to this program, but as well their opinions regarding the challenges Uganda faces nowadays in order to build a peaceful environment and the possible solutions to overcome them. It explores then more thoroughly the opinions of the participants on the AVP: the advantages drawn from their participation, their criticisms and their suggestions to improve the training such as the concrete impacts on their life. It states also their views on the practical, cultural and personal applicability of the AVP. This chapter being the core of the investigation, it would have benefit from being split in different chapters. The sixth chapter is the conclusive one, developing some tracks to better AVP programs and suggesting research issues. The interviews outlines and a list of recommendations to improve this AVP are grouped under an annexes section. Several specific points are worthwhile to highlight in order to explain the interest of this book. The author does not only focus on the violence resulting from the different wars tearing apart the country but tackles as well daily violence’s issues, especially domestic violence. The adoption of this gendered viewpoint sheds an unusual light on the issue: it deepens not only the perspective of these peace education programs but as well the investigation itself. Indeed, studies normally deal with only one aspect of violence without embracing all its aspects, which are nevertheless interlinked. Moreover, the study is nurtured with long quotations of interviews which are put into perspective and confronted the one with the other. This gives the reader a broad and complete picture of the diverse opinions concerning the use of this AVP. Nevertheless, and in order to thicken this representation of a peace education program and its impacts, true or expected, it would have been interesting to learn more about AVP in other countries or on other peace education programs in Uganda. This would have been especially important because, as May underlines, a bias exists in the investigation concerning the kind of public. Indeed, the program was implemented within an University Department. Consequently, the people attending this program are already sensitive to the peace education’s issues. This 19
contextualization would have allowed the reader to understand where this specific peace education program is situated within the cluster of the other programs existing in Uganda. Likewise, the author explains that she asked to the participants to define what would be an ideal Ugandan society. This research work would have benefit from investigating further what would be a successful peace education program in the view of the participants or a peaceful society. To sum up, Anika May gives the reader the rare opportunity to hear the voices of the participants to these peace education programs. The richness of the outcomes, the rigor in which the research was led and the numerous quotations taken from the interviews realized by the author contributes significantly to a better understanding of these programs.

Thesis Review / Proefschriftrecensie C. Böhmig, 2010. “Ghanaian nurses at a crossroads. Managing expectations on a medical ward”. Leiden: African Studies Centre, African studies collection 23. ISBN 978-90-5448-093-8. By Diana Bosch The aim of the research was to find answers to the following questions of the author: to understand how nurses manage their work and the resources available to restore energy and motivation. Even though nurses are visible in the health care system, they generally have little authority within the hierarchy of the medical system, be it in Ghana or elsewhere in the world. Another aim is to contribute to the academic discourse in medical anthropology by answering these questions. The publication of this book also serves as an applied study of anthropology in nursing and anthropology of nursing. Throughout the book the perception of nurses, the emic view, the point of view from within, is given major attention. Böhmig, in addition to being the researcher is a professional nurse as well as a lecturer, who participated in her profession during this research, and thus was able to look behind the screens so to speak. Even though access to information was sometimes denied to her, it also gave power of authority to be a western trained nurse and scientist. She describes brilliantly how she sometimes felt and the doubts she experienced during her participatory research. In this hospital ethnography the researcher used the method of participant observation and personal involvement in the world of Ghanaian nurses. She applied an ethnographic approach in order to be able to produce a state of the art of contemporary nursing in Ghana. Carrying out research in a teaching hospital gives the possibility to describe the situation of the different levels in society. On the macro-level the biomedical and globalised procedures and techniques are examined and discussed; at the meso-level that is the teaching hospital, where patients finally end up when everything else has already been tried and a patient often is too late to be cured, which leads to frustration. At the micro level the expectations, dreams and fears of individual nurses become visible. The publication is divided into four parts. The first part gives an introduction to the research: the research setting, the anthropology of nursing, the hospital ethnography, and the theoretical considerations. The objective of the study as well as the methodology and roles are explained. The second part highlights nursing in Ghana, its history and way of training. In the different chapters, attention is given to some of the most important social and cultural aspects of life in Ghana. The concepts of health in the different stages of history and the developmental process in Ghana are described. In chapter two the author explains which ethical and methodological considerations have lead to the choice of this teaching hospital. The third part deals with nursing in the hospital setting, specifically the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, the capital of Ghana. In the respective chapters the way health workers and patients perceive the hospital is explained. The working routine of nurses on the medical ward, its hierarchy and differentiation as well as the place of death and religion in the nursing practices are also discussed. Hierarchical differences between doctors, nurses and other health workers and the patients is another important theme of the study. Part four discusses the place of nurses in Ghana, as they are in the middle of a change process: on one side their traditions and society and on the other side the challenges of modernity and possibilities to migrate if sufficiently qualified.
21
Böhmig concludes that two themes are crucial: the existence and application of power that leads to specific forms of knowledge and the interplay between Ghanaian nurses in their cultural setting and the international profession of nursing. In my opinion this study is a valuable publication that should be promoted to use in several studies. It is clearly written, in a very understandable language.

C. Böhmig Ghanaian nurses at a crossroads. Managing expectations on a medical ward. Leiden: African Studies Centre, African studies collection 23, 2010. Pages 273. ©Christine Böhmig, 2010. ISBN 978-90-5448-093-8.

Africanists on the Web Women in Proverbs Throughout the centuries ideas about women have been expressed in proverbs, the world's smallest literary genre. Mineke Schipper, professor of intercultural literary studies, Leiden University in the Netherlands, collected and studied proverbs about women originating from hundreds of languages and more than 150 countries. She wrote a book about this material entitled Never Marry a Woman with Big Feet. Women in proverbs from Around the World which has been translated into many languages (Chinese, Arabic, Spanish, Turkish, German etc). Editions in other languages will be published (Brazil, Korea) Today the website www.womeninproverbsworldwide.com has gone online. It gives access to Mineke Schipper's whole collection of more than 15 000 proverbs. The site can be searched on topics such as the female body, women's phases of life from girl to bride, wife, co-wife, mother, mother-in-law, widow, grandmother and old woman; basics of life such as love, sex, pregnancy, childbirth; women's work, her verbal talents and her power. More than a thousand metaphors about women can be found in the collection: women have been compared to a large variety of things from mimosa to lotus flower, melons and potato fields, cakes and other delicacies. One can search for all the above aspects and combinations of aspects on this user-friendly website. The site is interactive and people are invited to send proverbs originating from their own cultures. In spite of cultural differences there are striking resemblances in the patterns of messages in this global legacy. The collection reflects fascinating, hilarious and sometimes shocking views of women and their status in cultures worldwide. Reading proverbs makes us aware of where we come from as men and women today, and helps us to find out where we want to go.

Mijn onderzoek is getiteld "The social life of springs: encountering landscapes of spirits and development in the Kitui district Kenya".

Calls from members From June 2010 onwards, the journal ‘Medische Antropologie’ will start a new section with brief announcements on recently defended dissertations in the Netherlands and Belgium in the broad field of medical anthropology. Erica van der Sijpt, PhD-student at the AISSR and responsible for this section, is therefore looking for data on medical anthropological theses which have been recently defended, or will be defended in the near future. Her reports of these data aim to make dissertations known to – and hopefully also read by - a wide public interested in medical anthropology. If you would like your thesis to be included in this section, please send an email to Erica van der Sijpt (
[email protected]). She will then contact you for the precise details of your dissertation.

Vacancies POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS FOR RESEARCH ECONOMY’ UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA
ON
‘THE
HUMAN
The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Pretoria invites applications from suitably-qualified researchers for Post-Doctoral Fellowships to contribute to an interdisciplinary project on ‘The Human Economy’. People always insert themselves practically into economic life on their own account. But what they do is often obscured, marginalised or repressed by dominant economic institutions and ideologies. The human economy is conceived of as being made and remade by people themselves, being based on a holistic conception of human needs and with the interests of humanity as a whole in mind. This project builds on and will contribute to a collaborative international research program that began in the World Social Forum, 2000 and has already brought together theoretical and practical work on alternative economic institutions in Brazil, Argentina, France, Britain and other countries. Its prime focus is on the growing scope for economic initiatives that lie between the stark alternatives of the free market and state planning. As well as guaranteeing social rights, governments must encourage forms of self-organization where solidarity has a greater role. Equality and freedom come from the mutuality of everyday life, and not just from market contracts or citizenship. Scholars who have undertaken research relevant to these topics in disciplines such as Social Anthropology, Sociology, History, Political Economy, Development Studies, Philosophy, Literature or Geography are welcome to apply. Because the making of world society is at stake, there are no restrictions on where this research has been done. But the Faculty has a particular interest in fostering a dialogue on such issues between researchers from countries in the ‘global South’. The Faculty intends to award up to six Fellowships associated with this project to begin in January 2011, with the aim of bringing together scholars from around the world, and stimulating an international and interdisciplinary exchange of ideas. Successful applicants will · Have completed a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline within the past seven years · Preferably be younger than 40 years · Have undertaken in-depth and high-quality research on a topic relevant to the project Fellowships are for one year (2011), with the possibility of renewal for a further year depending on progress. Fellows will be expected to write up and publish

research relevant to the designated theme, and will have an opportunity to undertake additional, comparative research in southern Africa, should this be appropriate. Successful applicants will also be expected to · Contribute to the Faculty of Humanities Seminar Programme · Participate in an International Workshop on ‘The Human Economy’ to be hosted by the Faculty of Humanities, University of Pretoria in the course of 2011 · Provide guidance to postgraduate students who will undertake research on topics linked to the interests of particular Fellows. Each Fellow would mentor at least one student. Fellows will receive · A tax-free stipend of R150 000 per annum · A return air ticket between their country of residence and South Africa · Funding for possible research in southern Africa · Funding to attend one international conference outside South Africa during their tenure · Access to the facilities of the University of Pretoria, including office space. Applicants must complete the University of Pretoria Post-Doctoral Application Form before 30 June 2010. Applications will be considered by the university’s Post-Doctoral Fellowship Committee.
