LESSON 2 - PRODUCTION 1. Machine tools are the means of production by which all the machinery in industry is manufactured. The variety of machine tools on the market today is almost unlimited. The duty of the manufacturer is to provide all shops with safety devices. 2. This plant manufactures hundreds of such products in a day. In general the efficiency of the tool room largely lies in the successful manufacture of almost every engineering product. The raw material lists have been forwarded to the Stores Dept. for external ordering. Wherever practicable, the flow of materials and semifinished products should be unidirectional, i.e. enter the shop at one end and leave the shop at the other end, and the departments associated with each other should be adjacent. The correct grouping of production departments ensures the minimum of handling and transport. The side bays of the plant are utilized for the machining of component parts for complete machines. Plates, sheets, piping, finished brass and steel details are held in stock in the Stores. Dept. Component parts and sub-assemblies move forward through various production departments to the assembly shop where the products are assembled. 3. Production becomes more and more a process of highly integrated subassemblies, making possible the mass production of goods. The turret lathe is generally considered as the backbone of modern engineering production. The main bay of the plant is used for the manufacture and testing of large machines. Many powerful water power plants are known to be under construction. The machine tools are required for the production of tools, equipment and machines, which in turn are required for the manufacture of useful products. New machine tools have been installed to enable the manufacture of complicated equipment. Small size cement mixers will be produced on a mass scale. This process has proved successful for the mass production of radio component parts. The conveyers for the flow-line production have been installed ahead of schedule. The production manager was informed that no improvement had been achieved by applying the new method of packing. According to the production programme the refrigerator compressors will be manufactured using 3
the new method. 4. The old factory has been entirely re-tooled and re-equipped. Continual improvements of cost efficiency in automotive production is to some extent down to taking advantage of technological developments in machining. Higher cutting data reduced time in cut from 15 to 5 minutes. Tool life with Corocut inserts in grade GC4125 extended from 130 to 200 components per cutting edge and higher performance cutting data was realised. 5. The mechanised warehouse is equipped with an overhead crane and other efficient hoisting and transporting facilities. Hard manual labour should be done by automatically operating devices. The first two operations are performed in a single semi-automatic production line, while the others involve the use of special machines. The die-cast component is automatically ejected from the press onto the conveyer.
